BOOK REVIEW | THE UPSIDE OF FALLING BY ALEX LIGHT (SPOILER FREE)

Title: The Upside of Falling
Author: Alex Light
Pages: 208
Published date: 18 February 2020
Genre: Fiction, Romance Novel

It’s been years since seventeen-year-old Becca Hart believed in true love. But when her former best friend teases her for not having a boyfriend, Becca impulsively pretends she’s been secretly seeing someone.

Brett Wells has it all. Being captain of the football team and one of the most popular guys in school, he should have no problem finding someone to date, but he’s always been more focused on his future than who to bring to prom. When he overhears Becca’s lie, Brett decides to step in and be her mystery guy. It’s the perfect solution: he gets people off his back for not dating and she can keep up the ruse.

Acting like the perfect couple isn’t easy though, especially when you barely know the other person. But with Becca still picking up the pieces from when her world was blown apart years ago and Brett just barely holding his together now, they begin to realize they have more in common than they ever could have imagined. When the line between real and pretend begins to blur, they are forced to answer the question: is this fake romance the realest thing in either of their lives? (Source: Goodreads)

If you're looking for a cute and simple fake dating trope book, this book is for you! It was originally published on Wattpad, then it got adapted.
At the beginning, I found it hard to get used to the writing style. It wasn't written poorly, just too simple and a bit annoying to the point I felt sleepy. But eventually, the story starts to pick up.

The main female character is Becca. She loves to read, the kind that has floor-to-ceiling bookshelf and coordinate her books according to colors. I don't like how she always reads and not socialize because I love reading too, but I still spend time with real people because what's the point in living if we live by ourselves, right? Also, I don't like how the book tries to show reading is quirky. It isn't, really. Reading is not a superpower, it's just a habit and hobby. Nothing to be so boastful about. However, I can relate how Becca uses reading as a distraction from her family problems.

Becca doesn't believe in love because her parents got divorced 5 years ago. So, she reads romance books as a comfort because in fiction, the love story is safer, no heartbreak and it always ends on a happy note. Personally, I think Becca is naive. She should expect and prepare herself to get her heart broken once she dived into a relationship because real life is not perfect. Nobody will stay. No matter how many left, there will always be more leaving. Just because we don't want something to happen, it won't happen.

As for the male character, his name is Brett. He's basically a spoiled rich white kid and yes, he plays football (rugby) and yes, he's the captain. He just has to. Though at times Brett can be whiny and annoying, he's not that bad. I love how he treats his mom nice and how he always prioritizes her happiness before anything else. So, a plus point for him.

Because you make me feel safe. You make me feel hopeful.

This is not a plot-driven story, if you read too much Wattpad fanfiction you'd probably guess the ending in the early chapters. I read this for the cute romance. I think Brett and Becca are compatible with each other. I love how much they care for each other and they're always open and honest with each other. I love reading a good communication relationship. It feels refreshing.

However, there is this one part that was frustrating to read. To say it here would be spoilery, so I'm just going to leave you guys wondering. I think that frustrating scene is the climax which made it even more frustrating.

Overall, I would recommend The Upside of Falling if you want a quick read. This book is so cute, it made me want to date! (And I hate men, so you can guess how cute it is)

Rate: ★★★☆☆

Not everything had to have some big meaning behind it.
