Almost Midnight: Two Festive Short Stories by New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell contains two wintery short stories, decorated throughout with gorgeous black and white illustrations by Simini Blocker.

'Midnights' is the story of Noel and Mags, who meet at the same New Year's Eve party every year and fall a little more in love each time.

'Kindred Spirits' is about Elena, who decides to queue to see the new Star Wars movie and meets Gabe, a fellow fan. (Source: Goodreads)

Almost Midnight comprised of two short stories; Midnight and Kindred Spirits. And it got some artwork to match the stories too! Which is super cute. Personally, I love Midnight more than the latter because I think the romance is adorable. But I’m going to review both.

Midnight

This story is about Noel and Megs who first met at a New Year’s party and they became closer every year. They had been friends ever since and up until college even though they were separated. Despite being just friends, I know the feelings they shared as more than that is mutual. Noel kept hinting on Megs to get a New Year’s kiss, but Megs being ‘not-like-other-girls’ insisted she didn’t want a kiss, no matter how desperately she actually wanted it and then when Noel kissed some random chick Megs got pissed. This part of Megs is what I dislike. I can’t tolerate people who threw shade you know. I’m done with that. Now that I’ve grown up, I think if you want something then just be clear about it because people can’t read minds. But thank God finally at one New Year’s party, Noel confessed his feelings and they kissed.

Letting that personality of Megs aside, I still think Noel and Megs have great chemistry. I can just feel their love for each other oozing out of the pages. Every dialogue RR wrote flows perfectly and make readers feel what the characters are feeling. RR’s writing ability is unquestionable!

My favourite romance trope is friends-to-lovers trope, hence why I enjoy Midnight so much! It’s a short and fluffy read, and will make you crave for more cute romance.

Kindred Spirits

This is about Star Wars fans queueing up to watch Star Wars upcoming movie. At first, I thought why would I want to read about characters camping out for days just to watch a freaking movie because I’m not a Star Wars fan (sorry not sorry). But it turns out okay. This is just average for me. There were three characters; Elena, Gabe and Troy. Nothing really happened in the beginning. Elena and Troy did most of the talking about Star Wars which I don’t really care about, no offense. And Gabe was really shy and ignored Elena for the most part.

When Gabe and Elena started talking due to this one circumstance, I found them cute as friends. I can’t really see them as a couple because they don’t have that kind of chemistry, plus they barely know each other. Again, in this story Elena is portrayed as ‘not-like-other-girls’ as well which made me almost DNF it. Guys, it’s really okay if you’re just like other girls. There’s literally no harm in that.

But still, this short story taught us to not judge someone without getting to know them. Overall, it’s a fun read. I recommend it if you’re a Star Wars fan.

If you love someone, you should have to make an effort. You should have to get to know the person—you should have to work for that first kiss.
